After WW II institutional origins of scientific research in Latvian art history began at the Art Department (founded in 1968) of the Institute of Language and Literature at the Latvian Academy of Sciences (since 1992 – Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art). Art History Department was established at the institute in 1975. On June 1, 2002, it was reorganiset into the Institute of Art History at the Latvian Academy of Art.

Research work at the institute is focused on Latvian architecture, art history and theory from the prehistoric times up to our days, including a wide variety of aspects. The institute organises annual Boriss Vipers Memorial Conferences (since 1988) and publishes collected articles from the series “Materials for Latvian Art History” (since 1994) and the journal “Art History and Theory” (since 2003).

The institute houses a library and has started a collection of materials in CD-ROM format.
